Girl Power FA (Afghanistan)
Background
The mission of the Afghanistan Women’s Team (AWT) is to use football
as a tool for empowerment, advocacy, and resistance against gender
discrimination and oppression. The team represents hope, resilience,
and the fight for women's rights, especially in the face of the Taliban's
ban on women's sports and education in Afghanistan.
The Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF) currently represents football
in Afghanistan under the control of the Taliban. However, the
Afghanistan Women’s National Team (AWNT) in exile does not
recognize this administration because it has banned women's sports.
The AWNT in exile is a global team composed of Afghan female
footballers who were forced to flee Afghanistan after the Taliban
takeover in 2021. The team participating in CONIFA is made up of
Afghan players based in the UK, EU, where they have resettled as
refugees. It includes both former national team players and emerging
talents who continue to train and compete in their host countries.
They are training under the Girl Power Organisation’s membership and
support.
The goal of this exiled team is to represent Afghan women worldwide
and continue fighting for their right to play, seeking official recognition
from FIFA to compete internationally under Afghanistan’s name.
