Background
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania and consist mainly of 2 large islands: Unguja (often called Zanzibar) and Pemba.
The capital is Zanzibar City. During history Zanzibar felt under the control of the Oman, where ruled by the sultan of Zanzibar, had been a British protectorate and finally united itself with Tanganyika to form Tanzania, but kept strong autonomy.
The Zanzibar Football Association (ZFA) was established in 1926. Today it’s a member of the CECAFA (Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations) and an associate member of the African governing body CAF (Confederation of African Football). Zanzibar’s national team and their clubs do have a long and glorious history in CECAFA tournaments and in tournaments for teams outside FIFA.
